Prague Day 5
Today was our last day in Prague. We awoke to the heaviest snow we had seen so far. We had breakfast and got ready for our taxi to arrive to take us to the airport for our flight back to Manchester. While we were waiting we decided to go out and play in the snow. We were a little worried at this stage about the amount of snow that was falling - we hoped it wouldn’t close the airport. The taxi arrived and we were on our way. The taxi driver was great. We had a great conversation with him while he practiced his english on us. He was originally from Russia so he had a cool accent that was a mix between Czeck and Russian. He assured us that this amount of snow was a good amount. Light snow he called it. I suppose it was really, but we were still worried. He also assured us that the airport would still be open and the plains would be going without problems. We got the the airport and checked in. As the taxi driver said our flight still scheduled on time. As we waited to board we watched the snow ploughs in action, keeping the snow under control. We saw some funny things going on with the baggage handlers struggling to drive their little machines around with the iced up roads and lack of grip. The snow seemed to be falling heavier and heavier and it was not long before I saw the departing aircraft lining up for the de-icing trucks to do their trick on them.
We got called to board our aircraft and soon after we were ready to depart. Our Lufthansa Airbus A319 made it’s way over to the de-icing area and the truck started blasting the plane with some crazy chemical that seemed to turn the snow to bubbles instantly and within seconds it was gone. It took about 15 minutes to complete the whole job and then the pilot taxied towards the runway. We say waiting for what seemed like ages and then finally the pilot told us that the runway was closed until it had better grip. He told us that there were trucks that would spread a chemical along the runway to clear the ice. In the meantime we would have to go and be de-iced again in preparation for take off. Finally we got the go ahead for takeoff and the pilot took us down the runway. It was the shortest takeoff I had ever had - it felt like the aircraft was off the runway in 10 seconds!
Because of all our delays, we had now missed our connecting flight from Frankfurt and were starting to panic about actually getting back to Manchester. Luckily Lufthansa were organised and had us slotted into the next flight which got us back late that night. We got to spend a lovely few hours in Frankfurt airport as a bonus!
