Arrival in Prague

Carmen wrote this in the early morning 2253 days ago:

Sandra dropped us off at the airport. We were both excited and nervous as it was our first trip that was totally booked on the internet. As we lined up to check in we noticed that there were many people travelling home for Christmas, lots of Santa hats and much cheery spirit! We knew it was going to be a good trip. Our flight went smoothly and before we knew it we were in Prague. We collected our baggage and walked out to catch a taxi. Not being able to speak Czech we were a little nervous. We watched what others were doing and decided that these cars with signs on the side must be taxis. Tone walked up to the guy and asked “Taxi?”, the guy said yes so in we popped. We handed the sheet with the address of the hotel to the driver and he typed it in to his GPS and off we went. Before we had left the airport I had looked at the map to see how far approximately we had to go and after we had travelled in the taxi for 15 mins and we weren’t looking like we were anywhere near where we should be I was getting worried. I looked over to Tone he looked pissed off! A few minutes later the GPS was saying something that sounded like we were supposedly at our destination but we were like at the top of a hill in a tiny little street surrounded by houses - no hotel or tram lines in sight! The driver stopped the car, turned around and said “one minute please”, then we offered the hotel address to him again. He sighed and said “sorry” and re-typed the address - he had typed Ne Stirka instead of Ke Stirka! Before we knew it we were off again, heading back the way we came (at least we knew this time we should end up in the right place). After another 20 mins of driving Tone’s grip on my hand started getting very tight, I said “don’t worry” but in my head I was planning my plan of attack for the huge bill I was expecting. After nearly and hour in the taxi we came to a stop in the front of our hotel. The driver could not stop apologising. In the end all our worry was for nothing as he charged us only 300 krona, the trip is usually about 700 krona and we saw much of Prague for free!

Prague History

Prague is known as many things “Golden Prague”, “Prague the hundred towered”, “The most beautiful city in Europe”, and all of this is true. It is an amazing city. It is the capital of Czech Republic and is loated in the central Europe on the river Vltava. It has a population of approximately 1,225,000 and 95.5% of this population is czech. The city is very spread out spanning an area of 497 sq km. The central area of the city is split into sections. On the East side of the river is Nove Mesto (New Town) , Stare Mesto (Old Town), Josefov (The Jewish Quarter) and Vysehrad (High Castle). On the west side of the river is Mala Strana (Lessser Quarter) and Hradcany (Prague Castle). The river has numerous crossings but the most famous is the Charles Bridge.

One of the great figures of Prague’s history is Emperor Charles IV, son of Wenceslas. He was born in Prague but was sent to be educated in Paris. He spent much of his life travelling Europe. He gained much experience and education from his travels and when he returned to Prague he used this to start to rebuild the city.He took control of the Bohemian lands on behalf of his father and in 1355 he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. He advanced the city in many ways including building universities, building the Nove Mesto and many cathedrals. He ordered most of the constuction to provide employment. His son Wenceslas IV succeeded him as ruler however he faced strong political opposition. During this rule a man named Jan Hus began to preach against the secularisation of the church. He created a divide amoung the people which led to the Hussite wars. The winners of the Hussite revolution were the czech nobility who agreed to religious freedom. This all changed during Austrian Archduke Ferdinand I of Habsurg’s rule of Prague (1526-64) He took away all the privileges won by the Hussite revolution and he returned the power of the catholic church. During the Habsburg rule was the 30 years war which saw protestant fighting catholic, Bohemian fighting German. During this time the Bohemian’s culture was crushed and German language became the dominant language and remained so until late 19th Century. During World War I the divide between German and Czech became even greater, the Germans supported the war and the Czech did not, they led the campaign for independence. On 28 October 1918 the Cxechoslovak Republic was declared in Prague but the borders were not confirmed. Slovakia was incorporated into the Czech state and later the inclusion of Sudeten Germans. This had bad consequences as it gave Adolf Hitler a welcome excuse to liquidate Czechoslovakia. The Nazi’s took control 15 March 1939, universities were closed, newspapers stopped, people were imprisioned in concentration camps. No other country had lost such a high percentage of their intellectuals and artisit under Nazi rule. On 5 may 1945, 3 days before the war ended the poeple of Prague rose up against the Germans. Postwar Czechoslovakia saw the rise of Communism, and from 1948 the Czech communist party (Stalinist in orientation) destroyed any idea of a road to socialism. In late 1980’s the citizens of Prague demonstrated in Wenceslas Square in their thousands against Communism. A revolution took place in November of 1989. The change then saw the split of the nation into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on Jan 1 1993.

Defenestration (throwing people from windows) was a very popular practice in Prague’s History. Many important political figures suffered from defenestration over the years in Prague.
